Each bite of these rustic tarts offers a delightful contrast; the rich, slightly bitter notes of dark chocolate and the sweetness from the grapes. This chocolate grape tart is very easy to make and tastes like a luxurious treat.

  • Pastry dough – self-made or store-bought.
  • Red grapes – green or black grapes are perfectly fine, or a combination of the 3.
  • Dark chocolate – milk chocolate can work as well, but less prominent in flavor.
  • Sugar
  • Egg
  • Milk

How to Make Rustic Chocolate Grape Tarts

Step 1 – For 2 tarts, cut half a sheet of pastry dough in half. Place each square on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Using a small knife, score (making sure not to cut all the way through the pastry) the perimeter to create a border approx 1/4-1/2 inch from the edge. You can punch tiny holes in the dough with a fork, in order to prevent the part inside the border to puff up. Since the filling (grapes) is relatively heavy, there is not need to do this.

Step 2 – Divide the grated chocolate over the two tarts and spread it out as much as possible, within the border.

Step 3 – Place the grapes on top of the chocolate and sprinkle each with a pinch of granulated sugar. This is an optional step and depends on the sweetness of the grapes.

Step 4 – Place the baking sheet in an oven of 400 degrees F for about 20 minutes.

Brush egg wash over the border and sprinkle with turbinado sugar. Place back in the oven for another 5 minutes.

Allow to cool a little and enjoy!

Notes

  1. Any color of grapes will do, or any combination of colors.
  2. Egg wash can be made with water, milk or cream.
  3. You can punch tiny holes in the dough with a fork, in order to prevent the part inside the border to puff up. Since the filling (grapes) is relatively heavy, there is not need to do this.
  4. The egg wash will give the border of the tarts a nice shine, but can burn easily during baking, so keep an eye on that. One way of preventing that is to brush the egg wash on the border, just before the end of the baking time.
  5. Please allow the tarts to cool a little bit before you take a bite; the grapes will be hot inside and you could burn your lips.
