Savory Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes have an incredible flavor on their own, so with a few ingredients and minimal effort, you can easily create a fluffy bowl of potato deliciousness.

This is not your classic sweet potato casserole with cream, brown sugar, cinnamon, maple syrup, pecans and marshmallows. In this recipe the sweetness of the potato is performing a balancing act with savory elements. These Savory Mashed Sweet Potatoes are a healthy upgrade of your normal mashed potatoes.

  • Sweet potatoes
  • Green onions
  • Parsley – or sage or thyme
  • Garlic
  • Milk – or sour cream or yogurt
  • Butter – optional

How to Make Savory Mashed Sweet Potatoes

  • Step 1– Peel and cube the sweet potatoes and transfer the cubes to a saucepan with water and salt. Bring the mixture to a boil, turn down the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes or until fork tender.
  • Step 2 – Drain the sweet potatoes and return them to the saucepan. Mash them to a consistency you prefer. This can be until perfectly smooth or a mixture that still has some potato pieces left.
  • Step 3 – Add sliced green onions, chopped parsley and minced garlic and stir. (Keep some parsley behind for garnish)
  • Step 4 – Add milk (or sour cream/yogurt) until you reach the desired consistency.
  • Step 5 – Add salt & pepper to taste.
  • Step 6 – Transfer Savory Mashed Sweet Potatoes to a bowl, create a swirl and place a dollop of butter (optional) on top. Sprinkle with parsley and serve.
  • Step 7 – ENJOY !

Alternatives and Substitutes

  • Milk – any type of milk alternative may do, but they all have their effect on the flavor. Cream is also an option, but will add unnecessary calories to your dish that is already creamy.
  • Spices – obvious choices would be paprika, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper or chili pepper. Don’t add too much. Sweet potatoes are a side dish and they should not take center stage away or overpower the flavor from you main dish.
  • Fresh herbs – Thyme or sage are great and so is rosemary. Rosemary is strong, so only add a tiny bit.
  • Garlic – next to garlic, you can add onion that you could cook first or you can add it raw and leave out the green onions.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces sweet potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon green onions thinly sliced, cut on bias
  • 1 tablespoon parsley finely chopped
  • 1/2 clove garlic (NOTE 1)
  • 1/4 cup milk or sour cream or yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon butter optional
  • salt & pepper

Notes

  1. Use garlic paste instead of a garlic clove if that’s more convenient to you.
  2. Keep some parsley behind for garnish.
  3. When using sour cream or yogurt, the flavor will have a tiny tangy hint, that you won’t get from the milk.
